A Master Builders survey has revealed that Victorian residential builders have experienced a reduction in enquiries and orders due to client finance problems. Conducted by Victoria’s peak building industry body, the Master Builders Association, the Building Trends survey asked builders to identify which issues were having the biggest impact on their business.

Master Builders has welcomed the Victorian Transport Plan announced by the State Government today calling it a sound investment in Victoria’s transportation future.
Master Builders Executive Director, Brian Welch, said the Plan will stimulate civil construction activity, ease transport pressures and improve the liveability of Victoria.

Another Rate Cut to Bolster Confidence -
The building industry has welcomed the 75 basis point (0.75 per cent) interest rate cut by the RBA last week. The big four banks have since passed-on most of the cut, around 60 basis points, to borrowers.

Christmas Closedown 2008-2009
The agreed minimum Christmas closedown dates for those covered by the terms of CFMEU EBA 2008-2011 (and for those that have adopted the CFMEU 2008 Working Day Calendar under EBA 2005-2008) are:
Last working day – Friday, 19 December 2008
First working day – Monday, 12 January 2009
Employees under EBA 2005-2008 or CFMEU EBA 2008-2011 who have not accrued sufficient pro rata annual leave at the time of the agreed Christmas closedown, may be stood down by the employer in order to give the them the minimum leave of absence required. Without the accrual of sufficient annual leave, an employee will be on unpaid leave. In order to plan financially for a period of unpaid leave it is advisable that employees are notified in advance of the requirement to be stood down over the Christmas / New Year period.

Urban Growth Boundary Expanded -
The Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) will be extended as new figures reveal Melbourne’s population could reach 5 million. While builders will welcome the expansion, Master Builders has called for the scrapping of the UGB altogether as it has forced up the price of land by reducing land supply. Click here for more.
